Scleral Lenses: For Keratoconus, PMD & Post-LASIK
Restoring Vision When Glasses and Soft Contacts Fail.
"I've been told nothing else can be done."
We hear this far too often. If you have been diagnosed with an irregular cornea, standard glasses and soft contacts will never provide clear vision. They can correct "blur," but they cannot correct distortion.
At TSO Kyle, Dr. Waqar uses advanced scleral lens technology to "mask" your corneal irregularity. By creating a new, smooth optical surface over your eye, we can often restore 20/20 vision to patients who thought they were permanently visually impaired.
Conditions We Treat
We specialize in medically necessary contact lenses for:
Keratoconus & PMD
Whether you have classic Keratoconus or Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD), the cornea bulges outward. We design custom lenses that vault over the "cone" without touching it.
Post-Surgical Complications
Including Post-LASIK Ectasia and Radial Keratotomy (RK) Scarring. If your past surgery has left you with fluctuating vision or starbursts, specialty lenses can stabilize your sight.
Corneal Transplants
After a full or partial transplant (PKP or DALK), the eye surface is often uneven. Scleral lenses protect the graft while providing high-definition optics.
Severe Dry Eye
Scleral lenses hold a reservoir of saline fluid against the eye all day. This liquid bandage provides profound relief for Sjögren's Syndrome and severe dry eye sufferers.
Are You Seeing This?
Patients with irregular corneas often experience specific visual artifacts that glasses cannot fix. Do you see:
- Ghosting: Seeing a faint double image overlapping the real one (like text on a screen).
- Starbursts: Streetlights exploding into spiky stars at night.
- Halos: Foggy rings around bright lights.
- Smearing: Objects looking like they have a "tail" or are stretched.
Our Lens Technology
We don't use "off-the-rack" lenses. We use custom designs tailored to the exact elevation of your eye.
InSight™ Scleral Lenses
Best for: Advanced Keratoconus & Severe Dry Eye.
The InSight™ is a comprehensive scleral lens that vaults over the entire cornea, resting gently on the white sclera. Because it creates a fluid reservoir over the eye, it masks irregularities and optimizes vision and comfort for the most challenging corneas.
ComfortKone OZ (Optical Zone)
Best for: Glare & Halos.
For patients who see "starbursts" at night, the ComfortKone OZ features a larger optical zone. This ensures that even when your pupils dilate in low light, you are still looking through the clear optic center, minimizing ghosting and flares.
Common Questions
Does insurance cover these lenses?
Because these conditions are medical in nature, many vision plans (like VSP and EyeMed) classify them as "Medically Necessary Contact Lenses." In these cases, the cost of the fitting and the lenses may be fully or partially covered. We can verify your benefits before your consultation.
Are scleral lenses hard to insert?
They require a different technique than soft lenses (using a small plunger and saline), but most patients master it within a week. We provide one-on-one training to ensure you are confident and safe.
